The Department of Naval, Electrical, Electronic, and Telecommunications Engineering (DITEN) is an entity of the University of Genoa, established on May 1st, 2012, by Rectoral Decree No. 132 dated April 26th, 2012.
As of March 15th, 2025, the Department includes 87 tenured academic staff members (27 full professors, 30 associate professors, 2 RTI, 8 RTDB, and 20 RTDA), 30 technical and administrative staff members, and approximately 135 non-tenured researchers (PhD students, research fellows, post-docs, etc.).
To support its activities in teaching, research, and third mission, DITEN is organized into three structures known as "Coordination Hubs": the Electrical Hub, the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Hub, and the Naval Hub. Researchers carry out their research activities within groups known as Operational Units (UO), and may also form interdisciplinary research teams focused on specific topics.
The main research themes are briefly summarized in the following figures, with each Hub divided into three principal research areas:
Information and Communications Technologies

Naval Architecture and Marine Technologies

Electrical Engineering

This structure reflects the Department’s strong multidisciplinary nature, which is both a founding characteristic and a significant added value. DITEN represents a unique example of technical-scientific cross-contamination at a national—and possibly global—level, making it highly competitive in project development and contracting (relationships with industry, project design across various TRL levels, and technology transfer). This is particularly relevant in light of the current strong local, national, European, and global trends towards green and digital transitions (with significant involvement of the Electrical and ICT Hubs), and the opportunity to develop these themes with a strong focus on maritime activities and the blue economy (with major implications for the Naval Hub), all of which are closely linked to the specific characteristics of the regional territory.
