Lighting Lab

The Photometry and Illumination Engineering Operational Unit carries out research, also in collaboration with other laboratories, in the field of technical optics with a focus on industrial applications and measurement, design, and consulting activities for third parties.

The instrumentation, with which it is equipped, is calibrated and certified and allows it to optically characterize materials, examine the spatial and spectral emission of light sources and LEDs, and perform colour measurements.

The research activity carried out by the Business Unit encompasses the following lighting topics:

•    Interior space design (natural and artificial): visual comfort, numerical simulation, and modelling tools and methods;
•    Design at the urban level, with insights into energy efficiency and control of light flows ("Smart Street");
•    Design for art and cultural heritage, with emphasis on risk assessment of the damage caused for the preservation of materials;
•    Design of light management and control systems (Home Automation and Building Automation), aimed at dynamic definition of light scenarios and energy efficiency issues;
•    Study of chromatic aspects: interaction between light, colour, and matter;
•    Colorimetry of large surfaces;
•    Outdoor measurements with a focus on the performance and energy efficiency of the road and tunnel system;
•    Analysis of alternative tunnel lighting methods for energy efficiency.

The Photometry and Lighting Operations Unit collaborates with the industry by performing radiometric and photometric measurements in the laboratory and outdoors on luminaires and reflective surfaces. Measurements may cover illuminance, luminance, and quality parameters in outdoor and indoor environments, verification of street and tunnel lighting, in situ measurements of road surface properties, light pollution measurements, etc.

The Operating Unit organizes technical refresher courses on specific topics related to photometry and lighting engineering. Lectures can be held at the Department of Affiliation of the Operating Unit or at the applicant's facility.
