The research activities of the CMTEST Laboratory concern the field of diagnostics applied to electrical components and equipment and the field of nanotechnology.
The CMTEST studies innovative diagnostic methods, based mainly on partial discharge measurement, suitable for the identification of problems in industrial plants and that allow to intervene on processes in order to optimize production cycles even in the presence of critical issues. This in a Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) perspective. These studies are also borrowed in other areas where the availability of resources related to the operation of electrical equipment is of fundamental importance.
The CMTEST also deals with electrical characterization of nanofilled polymers. In particular, electrical treeing and electrical aging studies are carried out on different polymers (low density polyethylene, LDPE and ethylene vinyl acetate EVA) loaded with particles of nanometric size of lamellar and filamentous fillosilicates (montmorillonite and sepiolite) and of spherical silicates. In addition, the CMTEST studies the behaviour of insulation systems of windings of rotating machines. In particular, nanofilled enamels and impregnation resins are studied as ground wall primary and secondary insulating materials. Such studies are carried out on "twisted pairs" specimens but also on real stator windings of asynchronous machines.
